Fight the Right Battle – Episode 2 – Freedom from Anxiety with Sonja Corbitt

Fight the right battle.

You feel like you’re spinning your wheels, laboring till you’re exhausted but seeing little permanent fruit. You’re depressed that certain relationships are a perpetual painful morass. You’re frustrated that the numerous “prescriptions” of faith that you’ve tried are not working. I get it. We expend a lot of energy fighting the wrong battles, and such futility is an underlying cause of anxiety.

This episode explores how to fight the right battle: how to work with the Holy Spirit for lasting peace rather than against Him. Our focus is on temporary relief, while His is on our permanent rest in Him. So we must determine to lean into the difficulties He allows and “suffer creatively,” as St. John of the Cross says.

Reading 1 Is 11:1-10

On that day,
A shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse,
and from his roots a bud shall blossom.
The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him:
a Spirit of wisdom and of understanding,
A Spirit of counsel and of strength,
a Spirit of knowledge and of fear of the LORD,
and his delight shall be the fear of the LORD.
Not by appearance shall he judge,
nor by hearsay shall he decide,
But he shall judge the poor with justice,
and decide aright for the land’s afflicted.
He shall strike the ruthless with the rod of his mouth,
and with the breath of his lips he shall slay the wicked.
Justice shall be the band around his waist,

Gospel Lk 10:21-24

Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said,

All things have been handed over to me by my Father.
No one knows who the Son is except the Father,

Turning to the disciples in private he said,

Fr. Scott Traynor talks about the suffering of fear. Thoughts, feelings, and desires all come into play in our understanding of this topic. Wherever there is fear there dwells an experience of pain and wounding, which perfect love desires to heal. The love of God is the remedy and our prayer opens the door to healing and/or union with the One that loves perfectly. Our response in not trusting that love and areas of unforgiveness can be a block to that healing. How do we, in our united prayer with God, overcome this obstacle?

Father Scott Traynor received his STB from the Pontifical Gregorian University and his JCL from Catholic University of America. He has been an instructor and spiritual director for many of the programs at the Institute for Priestly Formation.

Father Traynor is a retreat master and spiritual director who has travelled the country as a speaker at various conferences, diocesan gatherings and national conferences.. He is especially sought after to present on the topics of prayer, discernment and priestly identity and mission.

He serves the Rector of the St. John Vianney Theological Seminary in Denver Colorado.

“Let us ask ourselves this question, to what degree can the evil in my surroundings effect me? With the apologies to those I am going to scandalize,I say that the evil around us- the sins of others, of people in the church, of society-does not become an evil for us unless we let Him penetrate our hearts. The point isn’t that we should become indifferent. Just the opposite. The holier we are the more we will suffer due to the evil and sin in the world. But external evil only harms us to the degree we react badly to it, by fear, worry discouragement, sadness,giving up, rushing to apply hasty solutions that don’t solve anything judging, fostering bitterness and resentment, refusing to forgive and so on. Jesus say in St Mark’s Gospel, There is nothing outside of man which going into him can defile him but the things which come out of a man are what defile him. Harm does not come to us(our souls) from external circumstances, but from how we react to them interiorly.”
