The Litany of Humility – text and mp3 audio download

The Woman and the Wellby Merry Cardinal del Val, secretary of state to Pope Saint Pius X
from the prayer book for Jesuits, 1963

O Jesus, meek and humble of heart, Hear me.

From the desire of being esteemed, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being loved, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being extolled, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being honored, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being praised, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being preferred to others, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being consulted, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being approved, Deliver me, Jesus.

From the fear of being humiliated, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being despised, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of suffering rebukes, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being calumniated, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being forgotten, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being ridiculed, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being wronged, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being suspected, Deliver me, Jesus.

That others may be loved more than I,
That others may be esteemed more than I,
That, in the opinion of the world, others may increase and I may decrease,
That others may be chosen and I set aside,
That others may be praised and I go unnoticed,
That others may be preferred to me in everything,
That others may become holier than I, provided that I may become as holy as I should,
Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.  Amen.

  1. Here is my offering of my small bundle of loaves and fishes .. lead me in this path you have put me on, protect me from the temptations of evil to abandon it. Shelter me in your arms both in earthly and spiritual terms so that I can do your will. I need you now dearest Lord. Bless all those who have reached out and sustained me thus far and those in the future who will. Amen.

  2. I am in a continual battle with pride and vanity and have been for most of my life. I have
become very good at acquiring the approval, admiration and affection of others through my interactions with them. Help me Lord, to employ these social skills soley for the benefit of others rather than for my self-aggrandizement.
