The Story of St. Perpetua and St. Felicity with Mike Aquilina

mikeaquilina
Mike Aquilina offers the compelling story of the St. Perpetua and her great friend and sister in the faith, St. Felicity.

From CNA:

Saints Perpetua and Felicity were martyrs who died for the faith around the year 203.

St. Perpetua was a young, well-educated, noblewoman and mother living in the city of Carthage in North Africa. Her mother was a Christian and her father was a pagan. In terms of her faith, Perpetua followed the example of her mother. Despite the pleas of her father to deny her faith, Perpetua did the very opposite, and fearlessly proclaimed it. At the age of 22, she was imprisoned for her faith. While in prison she continued to care for her infant child and put up with the tortures designed to make her renounce her faith. Perpetua remained steadfast until the end. St. Perpetua was sacrificed at the games as a public spectacle for not renouncing her faith.
St. Felicity was a pregnant slave girl who was imprisoned with St. Perpetua. Little is known about the life of St. Felicity because, unlike Perpetua, she did not keep a diary of her life. After imprisonment and torture, Felicity was also condemned to die at the games. Only a few days before her execution, Felicity gave birth to a daughter who was secretly taken away to be cared for by some of the Faithful.

The feast of these Saints is March 7.

IP#312 Mike Aquilina – How the Choir Converted the World on Inside the Pages with Kris McGregor

Mike Aquilina - Fathers of the Church and so much more... 5Another phenomenal book from the prolific Mike Aquilina!  Filled with historical perspective and faith-filled insight, “How the Choir Converted the Word: Through Hymns, With Hymns, and In Hymns” isn’t just for the church choir!  Our conversation covers the spectrum and encourages all of us to remember we are called not a perfect song to the Lord, but a joyful song!  And isn’t that what our faith fills our hearts with?  As always, Mike’s enthusiasm for the subject is contagious and encourages us to spread the “Good News” with a hymn in our heart! Highly recommended.

You can find the book here

“This is the perfect gift for your parish music director—and the whole choir—and everyone who should be singing in the congregation. When we sing, we pray, and we evangelize too. That’s one way the early Christians changed the world.”
Scott Hahn, Professor of Theology at Franciscan University of Steubenville and best-selling author of The Creed

“Aquilina has all the qualities that a good guide should possess: he knows the terrain (taking the reader through Scripture, antiquity, and the Church Fathers), he has a discerning eye (spotting the place of music in the Church), and is an engaging wit (the reader feels like he has been brought to stand outside the Jerusalem Temple, or in Ephrem’s choir, or beside Ambrose in the great cathedral at Milan). This book considers an important but overlooked element of theologia prima, namely, how the Church performs her theology in what is actually sung doctrine. Easily accessible, fascinating, and inspiring to believers today.”
David Fagerberg, Professor of Liturgical Studies at Notre Dame University and author of On Liturgical Asceticism

The Church was now entering the most dangerous era in her history—a time when some even inside the Church questioned whether the institution would survive. By the mid-nineteenth century, all the forces that had been gathering against the Church in the previous centuries—Protestantism, revolutionary philosophy, nationalism, and industrial regimentation—were combining to attack it. The pope had been deprived of his temporal power and was shut up in the Vatican. All over Europe, anticlerical governments were taking away the Church’s property and putting severe restrictions on priests. Yet the Church would come out of the fire refined and stronger. As Christ had promised, the gates of hell would not prevail against it.

Europeans were amazed by these events happening across the sea. The French especially, who were instrumental in the success of the American Revolution, were fascinated by men like Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin, who seemed to combine European refinement with colonial common sense. Inevitably, French intellectuals began to ask the obvious question: if it had worked in America, might it not also be possible for a European country to throw off tyranny and substitute liberty?

In 1531—hardly a decade after the Spanish conquest—an enthusiastic convert, who had taken the Christian name Juan Diego, was hurrying down the hill to hear Mass in Mexico City. Suddenly the Blessed Virgin appeared to him. She gave him a message for the bishop: “Go to the palace of the bishop of Mexico. Tell him it is my great desire to have a temple built to me here. Tell him everything you’ve seen and heard. You can be sure that I will be very grateful and will reward you.” Bishop Zumárraga didn’t believe Juan Diego at first. As he was returning home, the Blessed Virgin met him again. “Obviously he thinks I made up my story,” Juan Diego told her. “So I beg you, my Lady, send someone more worthy, someone well respected, so that they’ll believe him. I’m nobody, just a little rope, the very end, a leaf.” “Listen, my dear little son,” Mary replied, “I have many messengers I might send, but it is important that you yourself carry this message.” She commanded him to go again to the bishop, and Juan Diego promised that he would.

The Lutherans and the Anglicans tried to retain some semblance of traditional Christian doctrine and worship. But if—as Luther claimed—the individual interpretation of Scripture was to be the only standard for Christianity, then the result was predictable. Other sects arose, and soon Protestants were split into dozens of sects and subsects, each one based on a particular interpretation of Scripture—often just a few verses in Scripture.
